Superman help Thor

Taking fan art to a whole new level is Jason Dussault. His exhibit, “Deconstructive / Constructive, ” is on view at the Hoerle-Guggenheim Gallery in Manhattan now through April 8. The Vancouver-born, NYC-based artist specializes in presenting pop-culture characters in a traditional mosaic format, evoking both classic 1960s Pop Art and contemporary visual artists like KAWS and Ron English.

Majestic mixed-media images of Thor, Superman, and Wonder Woman share gallery space with more endearing interpretations of Lego Batman and the Joker. But the centerpiece is a large-format, four-panel composite of 20 different Marvel characters into a single face. It’s inspired by a classic 1972 poster created by George Delmonico for an event dubbed “A Marvel-Ous Evening with Stan Lee.” In a release, Dussault says he grew up spending much of his time alone as a kid, drawing and redrawing superheroes and other characters. “Deconstructive / Constructive is my tribute to comic book art, my first love and inspiration.”

This assembled league of hero art has two side benefits: First, you can take a girlfriend or other non-fan and they’re not going to roll their eyes. Second, a portion of proceeds from the sale of the exhibition lithographs will benefit Free Arts NYC, an organization providing underserved kids and their families with both arts and mentoring programs. Now that’s a super power.
